Art has been a way for me to process anxiety, difficult life events and refocus on that which gives me peace and energy. Several years ago, my husband developed a severe chronic pain condition. One day, he developed an acute migraine that never left, and over the course of a year, developed widespread pain over his entire body, leaving him disabled with broken dreams and lost career. Determined to continue finding joy and faith, we both found stillness in the outdoors and comfort in friendships, both human and animal. The mindfulness and connectivity of nature and art together brings me into the present moment and makes me take notice of the small and beautiful, and my art allows me to capture it.

Using graphite is one of my favourite ways to create, allowing for adaptability and enjoying a grounding tactile experience. As I notice the magical world around me, I am compelled to capture details from all of my senses and infuse my art with the places I’ve been and the creatures I’ve met.

My art also explores how shifting our perspectives can help us change our reality, such as choosing to view anxiety with curiosity rather than fear or judgement. I enjoy drawing subjects that have adapted and are at peace in their environments. They’re earth stewards, fostering symbiotic relationships with nature, symbolizing harmony and balance in a world that often neglects it.

Another important element in my art is animal friendship, representative of many creatures but especially my dog. My ever-present shadow, walking with me through hardship, both silly and graceful. We wander life together as equals, friends for as long as we are here.

Representative of cooperation, community, and the sentience of nature, my art also includes mushroom imagery and mycelial networks. They are symbiotic with life around them by being mutually beneficial; providing communication and sharing resources through electrolytes and electrical impulses, acting similar to a brain. In the same way that I find joy in nature, I would love for whoever sees my work to receive comfort and curiosity. Viewing my pieces, I hope people are encouraged to go outside and be present.

Marie Moore is a multi-media artist; born in British Columbia but raised in Port Perry. Her work peers into a colourful world of magical realism. Inspired by the mystical sides of nature and science, she likes to shine a light on the small and unnoticed. Rooted in a focus of connection and symbiotic relationships, Marie hopes that people will resonate with her themes of growth, light, and the uncovering of life’s real ‘magic’. She is drawn to many subjects but especially loves to highlight her deep connections with animals and the forest. She also likes to play with contrasting colours and sizes to bring a dynamic balance to her scenes, and to challenge the viewer to question their natural perceptions and interpretations. Marie works in various styles and mediums, but she mainly uses oil, acrylic, watercolour, and pencil. In addition to traditional art mediums, she is experienced in creating digital art and has begun to experiment with combining the two. By bringing the digital into the physical world and integrating with paint, new textures and depths are brought to the artworks.
