David Clubine

David pursued studies in watercolour and technical illustration at OCAD University and has been painting commissioned watercolours for over thirty years. The architecture in Ontario features century homes, farm buildings, railway stations, churches and much more, providing a rich reflection of rural life from the past. Locally, Durham and York region offer many historical buildings with a wide variety of inspiration for his subject matter. David has also pursued landscape and seascape subjects both nationally and beyond, often finding these unique opportunities during his travels. 

He prefers to approach his watercolour paintings using several photo references beginning with light pencil sketching while taking extra time for general accuracy on perspective. David’s painting sizes may vary from a few inches to a couple of feet or more. This is followed by base washes using broad brush strokes as well as airbrush treatment depending on the end result. The completion on top of base washes is captured in detail using finer and smaller watercolour brushes. This may also leave a rare opportunity for pen and ink treatment if desired.
