Karen Hunter

Jeweller

Artist Statement

My jewellery is handmade and designed by myself, using sterling silver, semiprecious stones and niobium, which when anodized has a rainbow of colours.

About the Artist

Karen Hunter graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1985, from the Design Department. In 1990 she took a workshop “Anodizing Titanium and Niobium”. There she found the metal for her – Niobium. Karen’s jewellery is entirely designed and handmade by her. She works primarily with Sterling Silver, semiprecious stones and Niobium, a very rare pure metal, #41 on the periodic table and naturally hypoallergenic. The colours that Niobium produces when anodized are very colourful.

The metal work hardens slower than any other metal, yet stays strong. This makes it a very fun metal to work with. In 2016, Karen was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint to make 6000 tiny Niobium dragonflies for a coin that was released in September 2016. Karen has participated in the following shows: Muskoka Arts & Crafts, Originals Christmas Show, Inspired Hands, The Guild Alive with Culture, Summerfolk, Baysville Arts & Crafts Festival, Schomberg Street Gallery, King Studio Tour, and Richmond Hill Studio Tour.

Karen is one of the artists in a group at the Olde Mill Art Gallery & Shoppe, 357 Main St., Schomberg, Ontario. Open Wednesday to Sunday 11am – 5pm. This is an artist run co-op gallery.
