About the Artist
When people ask him why he is an artist, he really has difficulty answering that. He originally took up sculpture as a hobby never dreaming it would lead to where he is today.
When he decided he had too many pieces of sculpture available, it was time to become involved in the art community. Gordon got involved both locally and eventually throughout Durham Region, York Region and has also attended art shows in the Warkworth, Kingston and Bobcageon area. These shows included the Scugog Studio Tour, Uxbridge Studio Tour, Stouffville Studio Tour, the Victoria County Studio Tour, the Purple Turtle Arts Festival, and the Durham West Arts Centre Studio Tour. He also participates in juried art shows at the Station Gallery, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the Latcham Art Centre and Newmarket Gallery.
In his early years of sculpture, Gordon had work in the Green Goose Gallery in Uxbridge as well as a nature store/gallery in Warkworth. Gordon’s work can also be seen on an ongoing basis at the Scugog Arts Space in Port Perry.
Gordon’s work is now different from when he started. Although his main theme is still nature, his pieces are now more stylized and abstract and he tends to leave raw stone on a piece if it fits the design. Having looked at others work and say their work is evolving, he now looks at his own and can say the same thing. Not sure where he will be in 10 years.
Part of Gordon’s growth as a sculptor can be attributed to his students. He started teaching 6 or 7 years ago and is learning more from them than he ever imagined. Gordon keeps an open mind about the stone he buys and uses. If he hasn’t tried it before, he probably will. After all he said how can you learn about stone if you are not willing to expand your horizons.
