Nancy Newman – Textiles
I make casual, relaxed purses from waxed canvas and natural fibre textiles, printed with my own designs with eco-friendly dyes.
About the Artist
Beautiful design doesn’t have to come at the expense of the environment. Nancy uses natural fibre textiles wherever possible and always chooses materials with the smallest ecological footprint. Sourcing textiles that are free from harsh chemicals and dyes means gorgeous, authentic designs that are better for you, better for the earth, better for all of us.
Although she received her degree from the Textile Studio at Sheridan’s School of Art and Designing 2000, Nancy has been working with textiles for a very long time. She has run her own clothing manufacturing and retail firm, and has extensive experience in weaving, dye chemistry, pattern drafting, fabric structure and surface design.
Her block or screen printed designs are original, and done, one at a time, on natural cotton, with eco friendly dyes. She takes great pride in her work, and believes that straight seams, even stitching and sturdy construction are so important to creating a finished product that not only looks good, but will last.
The waxed canvas she uses for her purses comes from a factory in New Jersey that has been run by the same family since the late 1800’s. The 100% cotton is imbued with a food-grade paraffin wax that makes it waterproof, and gives it a patina similar to aged leather.
Her work is about ‘slow fashion’ where you can feel the hand of the maker, and know that each purse was created one at a time, with meticulous attention to detail.
